For those who would like to get out of the house for a bit on Christmas Day...

Since my divorce, I have made a tradition of hiking at Belding Wildlife Management Area in Vernon on Christmas Day after the kid(s) are gone. It's a very pretty small state-owned forest and some of the locals even decorate for Christmas! If you would like to get out of the house for a bit of fresh air, come and join me.

The trailhead I plan to use is on Tamarack Lane in Vernon, but it can be a bit tricky to find, so let's meet at 2:30 at the 7-11 on Route 30 in Vernon. If you know where the trailhead is, meet us there at 2:45.

The hike will be an easy 2-3 miles over rolling terrain. If it has rained or snowed recently, it may be wet or icy, so boots are recommended. Be sure to dress in layers, so as you warm up, you can shed as needed.

Keep in mind that I will have that very large and very active puppy of mine along, so if you are not a dog fan, this may not be the hike for you.

Of course, this event is weather-dependent, so check back that day if you are not sure.

I know I put in the newsletter that I would post a morning hike for this date, but, as it turns out, I have a work-related commitment in the morning. So, how about an afternoon hike?

Northwest Park in Windsor is not only home to our annual Steak Out in June, but also has miles of beautiful hiking trails. I'll aim for a loop hike in the two to three mile range and all of the terrain is easy, so a good hike for beginners. If it's been wet, there may be mud or even ice, so boots are recommended. Be sure to dress for the weather, and in layers, so as you warm up, you can shed them if needed.

Note that I expect to have the dog with me, so if you have an aversion to very large and very active puppies, this may not be for you!

Meet in the parking lot promptly at 3:00. Directions and more information at the park's website, www.northwestpark.org

Of course, the hike is weather dependent, so check back that day if you have any questions about whether it's on or off.

The Castle is all decked out for the holidays. Kevin will host an outing to tour the Castle with an optional hike first for those who are interested, and the tour after starting at about 12:45 PM. Details are below. Meet at the Grand Central Terminal at 12:45 PM if you only want to tour the Castle. If you want to tour the Castle at 10 AM, that is fine too but Kevin will be leading the hike portion with members of a Hiking Group (about 50 people going!).

Come join in on the tour of Gillette Castle which will be all decked out for the Christmas holiday season in a Victorian theme. We'll first hike the trails on the grounds of the castle. The trails are easy to easy-moderate. Mostly we'll hike the old railroad bed of the mini steam train that ran on the property. We should even be able to hike through the old tunnel dug for the train! After the hike we'll have lunch and take the tour of the Castle, which should be about $10 paid at the ticket booth.

We'll start with the hike at 10 AM and we should finish that by about Noon. We'll then take up to 30 min. to eat a picnic lunch (please bring your own or some for others if you want to share) at "Grand Central Terminal/Picnic Shelter" as marked on the map. There are some picnic tables. We'll start touring the Castle at about 12:45 PM. The tour should be done by about 2 PM. The tour is optional and those who wish to leave after the hike may. Depending on the hike, times may be earlier for lunch and the tour of the Castle.

Children are very welcome for the event. Pets on a leash are permitted in picnic areas and on hiking trails. Pets are not allowed in buildings or on decks, terraces or walkways leading to the castle.

We will meet at the outbuilding (marked as food concession on the trail map) next to the main (i.e. big) parking lot as you head towards the castle. The building had bathrooms. Just look me, Kevin the Organizer!

Our monthly dinner and business meeting, but we've switched up the plans this time. We will meet first, at 6:00 in the board room at Foodshare, 450 Woodland Avenue, Bloomfield. We'll aim to keep the meeting to an hour or so and then go out to dinner.

Several possible locations for dinner -- Ginza (Japanese), Zocco's (Italian), or other choices in Bloomfield or Windsor. Tell us if you have a favorite in restaurant in the area.

If we are really efficient, those who are interested could even catch a 9:00 movie at the Bloomfield Cinema!

(And, of course, if there are any newbies to Foodshare, you know Gloria will be happy to give you a tour!)

We haven't done this in a couple of years, but the chance is back to help with Foodshare's Turkey and a Twenty drive. The Turkey and a Twenty campaign is a region-wide effort to collect enough donated turkeys to make sure that everyone who needs a little help gets it this Thanksgiving and to raise money to help Foodshare feed people in need all year long.

This year, we will cover the collection point at the Highland Park Market in Coventry from 11:00 to 2:00. This drive is in conjunction with WDRC-FM, the oldies station, and some of the station personnel should also be on site with us.

We will be working in the front of the store, accepting donations from people, and putting the turkeys in bins, the other food in separate bins, and the cash donations in a cash box. We'll also hand out thank you cards and stickers.

Not clear if we will be inside or outside the store, but will update if I find out. Otherwise, dress in layers and warm enough to work outside if need be.

For those interested, we might stop for a late lunch when we are done.
