The 26th annual Walk Against Hunger takes place on Sunday, May 3, in Hartford. The event is a fundraising for Foodshare and several other local anti-hunger charities. I hope you'll consider signing up, asking some friends, family, and co-workers to sponsor you, and coming out to join me. These days, Foodshare is needed more than ever.

To sign up, follow these easy steps:

1) go to www.foodshare.org and click on the Walk Against Hunger logo

2) click on "Join a team"

3) put "Gloria" in the search box and press search

4) select "Gloria's Glorious Gang" and follow the steps to join my team

Once you have signed up, you can raise money using the website tools to e-mail friends and family, or you can print out a brochure and go raise some sponsors the old fashioned way, with paper and pencil! Or, alternatively, if you want a paper brochure, send me an e-mail and I'll mail one to you.

On Walk day, come to The Hartford, on Asylum Avenue in Hartford between 1:00 and 1:30 to turn in your pledges and get signed up. Look for me about 1:45 near the stage and the Walk leaves promptly at 2:00.

Hope to see you there. If you cannot come, but would like to support those of us who are walking, you can go here to make a donation.

A volunteer opportunity for our members. This is an opportunity to help out with remodeling, construction, & in some cases landscaping projects for elderly & disabled people in our communities. Each HomeFront Day is carried out by thousands of volunteers who represent corporations, businesses, faith-based organizations & civic groups coming together as a community to assist neighbors in need. I've volunteered the past three years for this annual event & this year's AmeriCares HomeFront project will be on Saturday May 2nd, from 7:30 AM until 5:00 PM. I will post the location of the event & info about the project & the needs that we want to fill as we get closer to the date.

We will be renovating 6 Enfield homes this year. Two homes are that of elderly widows; 4 others belong to single mothers with 2 of those with a handicapped child.

Coffee and donuts are provided in the morning. Lunch is also provided & snacks & cold drinks are available all day.

House Co-Captains (in charge of work and site):
(To Be Announced)

The team we will be joining is the one I've worked with the couple years (address is only team host's address/phone, not work location):

We are starting work at 7:30 AM. When you arrive, please sign-in, sign the liability waiver, & grab your tee shirt. Every member working must be wearing an AmeriCares HomeFront tee shirt throughout the day.

Please be aware that you will need to wear sturdy shoes, and clothing you don't mind getting dirty in. Bring work gloves, hand-tools, ladders, and rakes, shovels, etc, if you have them. Please make sure to put your name on your tools so you get them back at the end of the day!

Please know that if you cannot contribute the full day to this proejct, it is quite ok to come for part of the day... That is perfectly ok and understandable... So... if you can only participate for a portion of the day, please indicate in your RSVP when you can get there, ie. full day, morning only, afternoon only, etc.

You can find out more about Americares Homefront at:

General individual volunteer information is at (you don't need any to do any of the forms, just show up at the event and you can sign in there and start helping out!):

Founded in 1988, AmeriCares HomeFront is a community based volunteer home repair program that helps homeowners who are physically or financially unable to maintain their properties. AmeriCares HomeFront Day takes place during the first weekend of May, when teams of "hands-on" volunteers representing businesses, civic groups and faith-based organizations complete necessary repairs at no cost to homeowners.

We've changed our monthly dinner and business meeting to a Thursday evening to accomodate a couple of the officer's schedules. Since it's Thursday, we are going to start a little earlier than usual -- 6:30 PM.

We'll meet at Gloria's home in Windsor. Address and directions will be sent to those who RSVP.

If you'd like to bring something to complement the planned pasta entree -- appetizer, green salad, garlic bread, dessert or beverages -- please make a note on your RSVP.

This would be our regular date for brunch, but at the March meeting some concern was raised as to whether there was enough interest anymore in the brunches. So, as a result, we decided not to pick a host or location, but leave it open for comment. If you like the brunches and want to attend, we need to hear from you by the April meeting. Then a decision can be made as to whether we should continue have the monthly brunches.

Use the RSVP function to say "Yes" I like to come out brunch and we should continue having them or "No" I'm not really interested in brunch.

If you say "Yes" please use the comment section to suggest a place or two for brunch.

With spring having sprung, it's time to get back outside for some hikes. We’ll head to one of Gloria’s favorite haunts, the Belding Wildlife Management Area in Vernon. This is an easy 2-3 mile walk over rolling terrain. Dogs and kids are welcome. The trailhead can be tricky to find for first-timers, so we will meet at the 7-11 on Route 30 in Vernon (corner of South Street and Hartford Turnpike). At 3:15, we will travel as a group to the trailhead. Optional pizza to follow at New England Pizza, back in the same plaza as 7-11. If you would like to come just for pizza, meet us there at 5:00 (and say that in your RSVP so we're not looking for you at 3:00!).
